This easy but delicious cake from Food.com rounds out our Thanksgiving menu. The caramel topping adds a layer of gooey sweetness to an otherwise run of the mill dump cake. In my 12 inch dutch oven, the cake baked for 55 minutes with 12 coals in a ring around the bottom, 18 around the edge of the lid with 8 briquettes spaced evenly in the center. I would recommend serving it in bowls with spoons as the caramel sauce is a bit messy.
Caramel Apple Cinnamon Dump Cake
2 21 oz cans apple pie filling
1 (1 lb) box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cut into thin slices
2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 of 14 oz jar caramel ice cream topping
Lightly oil or spray 12 inch dutch oven.
In large bowl combine apple pie filling with cinnamon.
Pour into prepared oven.
Drizzle caramel topping in a checkerboard fashion over pie filling, first up and down, then side to side.
Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over caramel layer.
Dot cake mix with slices of butter, ensuring that most areas are evenly covered.
Bake at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
Allow cake to sit for 20 minutes before serving.
Serve with vanilla ice cream and top with more caramel if desired.
One of my all time favorite dump cakes. I've done this one, with and without the caramel, more times than I can remember. And always with rave reviews. Quick, easy, and very tasty. Thanks Liddy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Scott and Happy Thanksgiving! Liddy

Thank you for your feedback Jon, so happy you liked the recipe! Liddy
DeleteI have made this too, it is awesome
ReplyDeleteAfter unintentionally letting the DOs collect dust over the last couple weeks, I pulled out the 14 incher and doubled this recipe for a family gathering. My wife had some quart sized bottles of pie apples from last year, so I used two bottles, two cake mixes, a healthy amount of cinnamon, and two sticks of butter. It turned out amazing and all 27 members of the extended family had a good portion and loved it.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to know the recipe can easily be doubled and that it can feed so many people, so glad you and your family enjoyed the dessert. Thanks for your feedback Aaron!, Liddy
DeleteDid this one again for a work party. Turned out awesome and many of my coworkers were impressed. Little do they know that DO cooking isn't rocket science. Such a great recipe and tastes soo good. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo great Aaron that you could demonstrate dutch oven cooking to your coworkers, am happy to hear everyone liked the recipe, thanks for sharing! Liddy
DeleteWe were on a campout and I forgot the apple pie filling. However, we had fresh apples. So we used those instead. We coated the apples with cinnamon and sugar and followed the recipe otherwise. It was totally awesome and a huge hit!
ReplyDeleteWow, sounds delicious Jody, even better to use fresh apples, thank you for letting us know. Am very happy to hear the recipe turned out so well. Liddy
DeleteI have just two words to say about this dessert...

Easily the best dump cake I've ever eaten. And incredibly easy to make. I lined the oven with parchment paper, so cleaning up was easy, too.
Another winner. Thanks!!
Hi Brian, thanks so much for taking the time to let us know how much you liked the recipe, glad to hear it was a success, Happy Cooking! Liddy
DeleteI was camping again with my son's Boy Scout troop last weekend, and offered to do the cooking for the leaders. I made the Texas Style Chili with Chicken Sausage for dinner and this cake for the dessert. I've done it before and knew how good it was. I'd been telling the others what a great cake it was, and they were a bit skeptical until they tried it and then they all came back for seconds. Doesn't seem fair that a cake this easy to make should taste so good. Thanks again!!
DeleteI am entering a Cub Scout dessert competition and want to add a crumble (from a coffee cake recipe) on top. Will it be too dry? Should I add some moisture, mix up the cake, before I add the topping? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Gastronaut, most dump cake dutch oven desserts add liquid, usually soda, or butter, either melted or cut in small pieces after sprinkling the bottom layer with cake mix. Most crumble toppings use softened butter to hold the topping together so you can sprinkle it on top with your hands. There are quite a few cobbler/crumble recipes on this site if you want to take a peek, it might give you some good ideas. Hope this helps, good luck with your competition! Liddy
DeleteGood stuff. We altered with spice cake mix and it is awesome. So easy.
ReplyDeleteUsing a spice cake mix sounds even more flavorful, thank you for the tip! Liddy
